Long Islanders Vote for Beer of the Year Brooklyn Brewery’s Steve Hindy, Honored for Lifetime Achievement Golden Tap Awards Gala on May 15

BAY SHORE, NY. (April 19, 2012) — The Golden Tap Awards Gala, one of the premiere events of Long Island’s first Craft Beer Week, will be held at the Boulton Center for the Performing Arts in Bay Shore, NY on May 15, 2012. Awards will be given in a number of “people’s choice” categories, including Long Island Beer of the Year. Public voting began on Friday, April 13, 2012 at and will end at noon on Monday, May 7, 2012. Winners will remain confidential until publicly revealed at the awards gala.

Golden Taps will be awarded to winners in all aspects of the craft beer industry including people’s choice for Best Beer Bar, Best New York State Brewery, Best Long Island Brew Pub, Best Long Island New Beer of the Year (released in 2011), and the highest people’s choice honor, Long Island Beer of the Year. In a separate poll, industry business owners will vote for Best Long Island Brewery Sales Rep.

This year’s Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to Mr. Stephen Hindy, Co-Founder and President of Brooklyn Brewery. It was more than 30 years ago when Hindy, while stationed in the Middle East as an Associated Press correspondent, first became interested in homebrewing. This year, Brooklyn Brewery celebrates its 25th anniversary and was just ranked by the Brewers Association’s 2012 Top 50 Craft Brewing Companies in the country at number thirteen (based on 2011 beer sales volume). His commitment to craft brewing and his local community is acknowledged and applauded throughout the industry—two of the many reasons why Stephen Hindy has been selected for this prestigious award.

The Long Island Beer and Malt Enthusiasts homebrew club (L.I.B.M.E.), sponsors of the Golden Tap Awards Gala, will present the Beer Pioneer Award to Mr. Michael Deinhardt, founder of Long Island’s first homebrewing club, the Brewer's East End Revival (B.E.E.R.). B.E.E.R. was established in 1996 and is a registered club of the American Homebrewers Association. With Mike at the helm, B.E.E.R. has helped build a strong interest in craft and specialty brewed beer here on Long Island. It is his commitment to beer education that has directly impacted the growth of the local beer community and why he was chosen as the recipient of this honor.

The emcee for the evening’s festivities is Long Island native, homebrewer, and funny man Mr.Tim Saliani. His bigger than life personality and ties to the Long Island beer scene will undoubtedly lead to some good-natured ribbing aimed at presenters, nominees, and winners. Presenters for the evening include representatives from the beer industry as well as local business owners and special guests.

A limited number of tickets will be available for sale to the general public. Tickets include admission to the semi-formal gala, beer sampling, and light fare provided by Bay Shore eatery Milk & Sugar. Tickets can be purchased through the Boulton Center for the Performing Arts box office located at 37 West Main Street in Bay Shore or via their website Tickets are $55. This is a 21+ event. Funds raised will support Long Island Craft Beer Week (LICBW) and its charity partners. LICBW is a 501(c)3 entity.

Long Island Craft Beer Week will be held May 11-22, 2012 with special events planned in both Nassau and Suffolk counties. The 10-day celebration of locally crafted beer and where to enjoy nationally crafted beers locally.
