Winner Named In Local Brewery Battle
Two Local Breweries Collaborate and Take Home Gold

August 17, 2017 - East Islip, NY. The Long Island Craft Classic returned with record attendance to Heckscher State Park on Saturday, August 12, 2017 where it hosted the very first Long Island BREW’D competition. The BREW’D competition pit nine Long Island breweries against each other in a head-to-head taste-off, judged by event attendees.

Earlier this summer nine Long Island breweries signed up for a brewing competition knowing there would be a mystery ingredient with which they had to brew. Finally, on June 30th, the mystery ingredient was revealed—PEACH. Breweries then had six weeks to brew any beer style they preferred, as long as it incorporated peach into the recipe.

2017 competitors included: Blue Point Brewing Company (Patchogue), Great South Bay Brewery (Bay Shore), Greenport Harbor Brewing Company (Greenport), Lithology Brewing Co. (Farmingdale), Long Ireland Beer Company (Riverhead), Moustache Brewing Co. (Riverhead), Port Jeff Brewing Company (Port Jefferson), Saint James Brewery (Holbrook), and Spider Bite Beer Co. (Holbrook).

2017 WINNER: FUZZY FLAMINGO (a fruited Berliner Weisse)

Brewed by Greenport Harbor Brewing Company & Destination Unknown Beer Company

Ticket holders had the chance to taste these specially brewed peach beers and vote on-site at the Long Island Craft Classic for their favorite. The 2017 winner was a collaboration beer brewed by Greenport Harbor Brewing Company and Bay Shore’s Destination Unknown Beer Company, Together they brewed Fuzzy Flamingo, a fruited Berliner Weisse (4.8% ABV) described as a dessert Berliner Weisse brewed with fresh raspberry, peach and milk sugar.

“I was fortunate to be on hand the day of the Long Island Craft Classic to witness the response from the crowd. As the line grew and grew with more patrons sending their friends over to try Fuzzy Flamingo we felt we had a pretty good shot,” said Jon Kelly, Sales Director, Greenport Harbor Brewing Company. “We were stoked to win mostly because the competition was judged by beer drinkers,” he added. The winning beer came out of a collaboration between two long-time friends and brewers, Chris Candiano, president of Destination Unknown Brewery and Pat Alfred, head brewer at Greenport Harbor Brewing Company.

“We're all super happy with the way the beer came out, and even happier that the public liked it too,” said Candiano. “We are so humbled by the love and support of the whole craft beer community. We love doing local events like this, and the BREW'D competition added even more fun to an already exciting event. Winning is the icing on the cake,” he added.
