Long Island Breweries Compete in BREW'D Competition
Battle gets Juicy with Pineapple Beers
August 1, 2018 -- East Islip, NY. The Long Island Craft Classic returns to Heckscher State Park on Saturday, August 11, 2018 for what promises to be summer’s best fest. This tasting event will feature craft beers, wines, ciders, and the second annual BREW’D competition. Local breweries have their eye on the “golden keg” trophy as they prepare their pineapple beer for consumer taste tests and the on-site fan-favorite voting. www.LICraftClassic.com
Back by popular demand, the annual BREW’D Competition pits brewery against brewery in a competition for best in show pineapple beer. The 2018 “mystery ingredient” (pineapple) was selected through an online fan-curated vote. “Last year’s competition required breweries to use peach as the ingredient,” said Kristyn Dolan, competition organizer and marketing director at event producer Starfish Junction. “This year the most popular item in the write-in online survey was pineapple. People really like fruit forward beers in the summer time, the top contenders were almost all fruits, including strawberry, mango, and watermelon.” Hesitant to call them “weird,” Dolan said she “we did receive some ‘interesting’ nominations, everything from pickles and pepperoni pizza to hemp and horseradish.”
Last year’s winner was Fuzzy Flamingo; a fruited Berliner Weisse brewed with fresh raspberry, peach and milk sugar as a collaboration brew by two popular Long Island breweries, Greenport Harbor Brewing Company (Greenport) and Destination Unknown Beer Company (Bay Shore). After the competition, the beer was put on-tap at select locations for a limited time.
The 2018 competitors include breweries from across Long Island and include many different styles, from Pale Ales to Sours, sure to appeal to the masses who will vote for their favorite. Competing this year:
• 1940's Brewing Co., collaboration with Brickhouse Brewery - Luau Express (Pale Ale - 5.8% ABV)
• Barnshed Brewing - Beach Suit (Hefeweizen - 5.1% ABV)
• Blue Point Brewing Co. - Pineapple Mosaic (IPA - 4.8% ABV)
• Garvies Point Brewery Inc. - Sour Batch Pineapple Galaxy (Sour - 4.5% ABV)
• Great South Bay Brewery - Sagtikos Sour (Berliner Weisse - 4.3% ABV)
• Greenport Harbor Brewing Co. - Tiki Paradise (Berliner Weisse - 5.2% ABV)
• Lithology Brewing Co. - Pineapple Overload IPA (West Coast IPA - 6.4% ABV)

• Six Harbors Brewing Co. - Six Harbors Southdown Shandy (Shandy/Radler - 4.95% ABV)

Long Island Craft Classic ticket holders will have the chance to taste these specially brewed pineapple beers and vote on-site at the Long Island Craft Classic for their favorite. The winner will be announced at the end of the day and crowned the 2018 BREW’D champion. More than 2,000 festival attendees are expected to vote in this year’s competition.
