Brewing Competition "Mystery Ingredient" Announced
Local Breweries Prepare for Event at Heckscher State Park, 8/11

July 16, 2018 -- East Islip, NY. The Long Island Craft Classic will return to Heckscher State Park on Saturday, August 11, 2018 for what promises to be summer’s best beer fest. This tasting event will feature craft beers from local and national breweries and a selection of wine and hard cider for sampling as well. www.LICraftClassic.com

Back by popular demand is the BREW’D Competition where breweries will once again be competing for the coveted “golden keg”. The competition rules require a brewery to create a beer using a fan-curated “mystery ingredient” that was selected through an online public vote. This year’s mystery ingredient was recently announced and brewers are currently hard at work to create what they hope to be this year’s winning brew with PINEAPPLE.

“Last year’s competition required breweries to use peach as the ingredient,” said Kristyn Dolan, competition organizer and marketing director at event producer Starfish Junction. “This year the most popular item in the write-in online survey was pineapple. People really like fruit forward beers in the
summer time, the top contenders were almost all fruits, including strawberry, mango, and watermelon.” Hesitant to call them “weird,” Dolan said she did receive some “interesting” nominations, everything from pickles and pepperoni pizza to hemp and horseradish. “Pineapple is the international symbol for hospitality and I think it is a great choice for this year’s competition. It will make for a great seasonal brew,” added Dolan.

Last year’s winner was Fuzzy Flamingo; a fruited Berliner Weisse brewed with fresh raspberry, peach and milk sugar as a collaboration brew by two popular Long Island breweries, Greenport Harbor Brewing Company (Greenport) and Destination Unknown Beer Company (Bay Shore). After the competition, the beer was put on-tap at select locations for a limited time.

Featured among the 2018 competitors: 1940’s Brewing Company (Holbrook), Barnshed Brewing (Hicksville), Blue Point Brewing Company (Patchogue), Brickhouse Brewery (Patchogue), Garvies Point Brewing (Glen Cove), Lithology Brewing Co. (Farmingdale), Greenport Harbor Brewing Co. (Greenport), Great South Bay Brewery (Bay Shore), Long Ireland Beer Company (Riverhead), Six Harbors Brewing Company (Huntington), and others.

Ticket holders will have the chance to taste these specially brewed pineapple beers and vote on-site at the Long Island Craft Classic for their favorite. The winner will be announced at the end of the day and crowned the 2018 BREW’D champion.

The event offers both VIP (1:00-5:30 pm; $75pp) and General Admission (2:00-5:30pm; $55pp) ticket options; each includes unlimited beer, wine, and cider tastings.
