Winner Named In Local Brewery Battle
HopWins Brewery Takes Gold
Jennifer & Tim Davis Win Big in Homebrew Competition

August 13, 2019 - East Islip, NY. Saturday’s beautiful weather brought smiles to the faces of a record-number of Long Island Craft Classic attendees and the winners of the annual BREW’D competition. Thousands traveled to Heckscher State Park on Saturday, August 10, 2019 to try amazing craft beer, wine, cider, barbeque food, and to cast their vote in the third annual BREW’D competition.

Earlier this summer commercial brewers and homebrewers signed up for a brewing competition knowing there would be a mystery ingredient with which they had to brew. After a fan-curated online vote, on June 4th the mystery ingredient was revealed—MANGO. Brewers then had more than 8 weeks to brew any beer or cider they preferred, as long as it incorporated mango into the recipe. .

In the Commercial brewery category, the BREW’D competition pits brewery against brewery in a head-to-head taste-off, judged by event attendees. For the first time this year, a new, Non-Commercial (homebrewer) category was added to allow those with a passion for brewing to show off their talents as well. After sampling the entries, the event attendees were able to cast their votes, one per category. The winners were announced at the end of the event.

In the commercial category, Bay Shore’s HopWin’s Brewery took home the gold, receiving the most votes for their milkshake IPA called Dat Mango Tho’. Previous winners have included Greenport Harbor’s collaboration with Destination Unknown Brewery, Fuzzy Flamingo (fan-curated ingredient – peach, 2017), and Long Ireland Beer Company’s Moku Loa (fan-curated ingredient – pineapple, 2018). In the Non-commercial category, husband and wife team of Jennifer and Tim Davis, wowed the crowd with their Last Mango in Paris, a hard cider with mango and lactose.

Next year’s Long Island Craft Classic and the 4th annual BREW’D competition will be held on Saturday, August 8, 2020 at Heckscher State Park in East Islip, NY. For more information, visit
