Back by popular demand is the BREW’D Competition where breweries will once again be competing for the coveted “golden keg”. The competition rules require a brewer to create a beer using a fan-curated “mystery ingredient” that was selected through an online public vote. This year’s mystery ingredient was recently announced and brewers are currently hard at work to create what they hope to be this year’s winning brew with MANGO.
“Last year’s competition required brewers to use pineapple as the ingredient,” said Kristyn Noren, competition organizer and marketing director at event producer Starfish Junction. “This year the largest number of nominations and ultimate win went to mango. People really like fruit forward beers in the summer time, many of the top contenders were fruits, including passion fruit and watermelon.” Hesitant to call them “weird,” Noren said she did receive some “interesting” nominations, including pickles, tomato, fennel and marshmallow.
Last year’s winner was Moku Loa, an IPA brewed by Long Ireland Beer Company from Riverhead, NY. “For our Moku Loa Pineapple IPA, we used a base beer of our Mosaic IPA and infused it with a pineapple extract. We sampled various versions until we found the right balance of pineapple flavor to really allow it to shine, said Greg Martin, co-owner of Long Ireland Beer Company. “It was met with such a strong response that we put it on tap for a limited time at the brewery,” added Martin. Moku Loa means Long Island in Hawaiian. Previous winners included Greenport Harbor Brewing Company and Destination Unknown Beer Company.
New this year…Attendees will be able to cast two votes - once for a professional, commercial brewery and once for a homebrewed, non-commercial brewer participating in the competition. There will be two winners - one professional and one homebrew brewer.
Featured among the 2019 commercial brewery competitor category: Garvies Point Brewing (Glen Cove, NY), Lithology Brewing Co. (Farmingdale, NY), Exhibit A Brewery (Framingham, MA), Destination Unknown Beer Company (Bay Shore, NY), and returning to defend their title, Long Ireland Beer Company (Riverhead, NY).
Ticket holders will have the chance to taste these specially brewed mango beers and vote on-site at the Long Island Craft Classic for their favorite. The winner will be announced at the end of the day and crowned the 2019 BREW’D champion.
